Betty,

Small business owners and customers alike hear more about the underhanded "spam" type marketing because it's so apparent and so annoying.

Proper online marketing many times entails marketing to your customer without the customer actually realizing they're being marketed to: SEO, solid Social Media strategies, Blogs, and sales copy are all good examples of this. It's not tricking your customer inasmuch as it's earning their trust and guiding them to you.

thanks for commenting~

Spam. I guess I didn't realize that I also subconsciously thought of online marketing as spam. I am one of those people that aren't as comfortable with the internet/computers and especially online marketing. I see your point in connecting with my customers and understand now that it is completely different from spam. Thanks for making it easy for me to comprehend. Now it's time to take action...right?
