With the turkey haze finally over, I am here to report that Syracuse and Central New York held its own when Twittering on Black Friday. In fact, many have kept the fun going and are still tweeting to the CNY crowd.

For newcomers, the wikipedia definition of Twitter is the free social networking and micro-blogging service, that allows its users to send and read other users’ updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.

Syracuse.com setup a Twitter-feed in order for Syracusans to keep their fellow cold-weather mates up-to-date on the holiday shopping happenings around town last week. Tweeters merely type “#cny” or “#syracuse” in the micro-blog for it to post to this feed.

Not only has this been fun for social media users to connect with others locally, and an ingenious idea for a fledgling newspaper industry, it also reinforced how others in the local area believe in the power of web interactivity.

More and more small business owners will see the limitless possibilities with social media marketing. As I’ve said many times before – interacting with your customer builds brand loyalty. Beyond that, it’s an easy and fun way to generate new leads and keep previous customers up-to-date. Best of all, it’s FREE! And isn’t that what it’s all about when your business is small and up & coming?

Often, when explaining the services of ODX Fusion, I answer many questions on what social media is and how it benefits small business.  When I reveal to my customers ways they’re missing out on these powerful tools, heads start spinning. I believe overwhelmed customers become idle customers so I’ve scaled back how much info I drop on the topic all at once. Now I gradually offer ways to maximize online presence and allow small business owners to digest it bit by hearty bit.

As I read the Sunday edition of The Post Standard today, I was pleasantly surprised to see Syracuse’s local paper and Syracuse.com embrace the popular micro-blogging tool Twitter. 

They’re appealing to “Twitter-ers” to keep the community instantly updated throughout Black Friday shopping by tweeting on “where the bargains are found, who’s out of stock, who has stock, how long the lines are, even what you had for lunch…”  The tweets will be here on Friday.

It will be interesting to see how many people in Syracuse join in the fun as Syracuse still seems to be a bit behind on Social Media front, at least business-wise anyway. 

I, for one, will not be tweeting about shopping because I dare not step foot in any store on Black Friday, but I will be checking out the tweets of the brave!
